Chapter Four

Eli woke when the fire burned low enough to raise goosebumps on his exposed skin. Outside, the storm still blew, rattling the glass in the old windows of the cabin and causing the trees to creak and sway. Inside, the air was rapidly cooling. He slid his hand over the soft, warm curves of the woman tucked so sweetly against him.

Wrapped in a warm cocoon of blankets, he didn’t want to get up, but he didn’t want the fire to go completely out. He slid from the bed as carefully as he was able and adjusted the blankets around Maggie’s spent body. She murmured a sleepy protest and rolled onto her back, exposing one ripe breast. Her nipple pebbled in the chilly air, and it took every ounce of willpower Eli possessed to turn away and re-stoke the fire. Neither the mundane task nor the cold air could stop his cock from hardening. His. His mate was in that bed, sated and filled with his seed.

When he finished rebuilding the fire, he stood over the bed, looking down at the unexpected treasure fate had gifted him. As if she could sense his attention, Maggie moaned softly in her sleep. She threw an arm over her head, and the blanket slipped lower, baring her to the waist. Stifling a groan at the sight, Eli climbed in beside her, determined to be good and let her get the rest she so desperately needed.

When he and Case had discussed searching for a female shifter last year, he’d learned everything he could about them—why there were so few left, how the mating process worked and how heat affected their bodies. He’d spoken with a few older shifters he knew, and he’d studied all of the old journals Case had collected over the years. Dec had laughed at the idea of going hunting for one, saying they’d have better luck finding a unicorn. And yet here was Maggie, delicious and passionate, so perfectly ripe and ready to be mated.

He hadn’t believed it last night when he’d first caught her scent, certain that it was a trick of the wind. He’d almost been back to his truck by then, parked a mile off the highway on an old dirt service road. Just a tease of wolf scent in the air, but he’d had to follow it. He hadn’t completely understood the compulsion until he’d drawn closer to the cabin. Her scent was stronger there, irresistible by then.

It had been like something out of a storybook. The isolated mountain. Snow floating down from the pale sky and that curl of smoke spiraling up from the chimney. He’d had the fleeting thought that it was some kind of trap until the moment Maggie opened the door and he’d seen her standing there, uncertain and alone.

He’d been lost the moment she met his gaze. He was a fairly dominant wolf, second in their pack to Case. With the way Maggie grew up, she couldn’t know how unusual it was for a wolf to be able to look him in the eyes for longer than a second or two.
